DELTA KAPPA GAMMA SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL
NOVEMBER 2020 President Debbie Gill Joan Brides, Newsletter Editor
A Message from Debbie: Welcome back to the 2020 – 2021 school year. I hope that this finds you and your family members well. The last seven months
have been like none other. As members of Alpha Zeta we hope to keep engaged and to support one another during this unprecedented time. The board met on August 11th in order to discuss plans for the upcoming year, which we have outlined in this newsletter. We hope that you are able to participate in some, if not all of these events. These events are subject to some changes as the year unfolds. We discussed the idea of a book group. “The Beantown Girls” was suggested as the first book for our book group reading. This book is by a local author Jane Healey. It is a historical fiction about women who served for the Red Cross Club Mobile during World War II.
Jeanne Ivas presented the FY 2020 budget update. Our balance effective July 31, 2020 is $7,039.87.
Enclosed is an updated membership list with changes in red. If you see an error in your information, please let Joan know.

FEBRUARY 2020 President Pamela Larson Joan Brides, Newsletter Editor
Yikes! It’s the end of February 2020 already and winter, so far, has not given us much snow or severe cold. Of course, we could get a huge snowstorm in March! (Let’s hope not.) Now onto Alpha Zeta news.
Our Holiday Get Together was held Tuesday, December 10th at the Grille at Fairview Inn in Brant Rock. Eighteen members enjoyed a delicious dinner of their choice and had a fun time swapping items in the Yankee Swap. Pam Gould and Ava Grimason collected the donations for the Plymouth Area Coalition for the Homeless and delivered them on December 19th. We donated 22 pairs of gloves, four pairs of mittens, 6 adults’ and 3 children’s socks plus 16 girl’s socks, 11 pairs of slipper socks, 3 pajama bottoms, a women’s cardigan, 2 children’s throws and pillows, an Eric Carle board book set, 8 barrettes, a baby’s blanket, and 2 scarves. They also presented the director Sue Giovanetti the $228.01 check from Designers Circus. Pam stated that she hoped our chapter would continue to support this charity as we are helping many local families. Ava and Pam present the check to Sue.
ALPHA ZETA EVENTS
On Wednesday, February 19th eight of our chapter members had a wonderful day at the Museum of Fine Arts. They enjoyed the special exhibit called “Women Take the Floor: Her vision, her voice across a century of art”. Gail Laffer made reservations for them to have lunch at the New American Café…fabulous! They followed that with a short tour of the European gallery. It’s always such a nice day! Plan ahead: Joan Garity is going to make arrangements for us to visit the Isabella Gardner Museum over the April school vacation. More information will be forthcoming about that trip.
March 18th - Spring into DKG Dinner Olde Hitching Post, Hanson

DKG INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION JULY 7-11, 2020 PHILADELPHIA, PA
The DKG International Convention will soon be here. It promises to showcase the many historical and cultural facets of Philadelphia along with those of DKG. The opening session on July 7th will begin with the biennial procession of the flags representing the many countries and cultures of members in our Society. Welcomes will be delivered by such U.S. historical personages as Ben Franklin and Betsy Ross, who will set the tone for a week devoted to historical sights just outside the doors of the Downtown Marriott Hotel, the site of the convention. Other performances to introduce convention attendees to the diversity of Philadelphia are also in the making. It will be followed by a ticketed event at the Reading Terminal Market directly across the street from the hotel’s main entrance. While there, food vendors and Molly Malone’s beverage stations will give you cause to pause as you sample culinary treats typical of the many cultures that call Philadelphia “home.” Feel free to graze as you wander the sales stalls and are entertained by local musicians. It’s the perfect venue to reconnect with DKG friends from past international events and to make new connections, all with no transportation “to or from” needed. Tickets for the opening night event at the Reading Terminal Market will be available for purchase on the convention registration form on the DKG website. Early bird registrations ($180 vs. $200) for the Downtown Marriot Hotel are due by Friday March 6th Hopefully, we will have a group from Alpha Zeta attend the convention and enjoy seeing the sites and listening to the sounds of Philadelphia together.
If you are interested in attending please talk to Gail Saccone, who is planning to attend, so that travel arrangements to Philadelphia can be coordinated.
$$$$ DUES TIME $$$$ It’s that time again to pay our DKG dues to International, the State and our Chapter. Please send your check payable to DKG Alpha Zeta to our treasurer Jeanne Ivas 315 Winter Street, Norwell, MA 02061 by June 1st as she has to coordinate everything and send our membership list in by the end of June. Dues are the same as the past several years $85.00. Just an idea – Save postage and bring your check to the Hitching Post and give it to Jean in person.

NOVEMBER 2019 President Pam Larson Joan Brides, Newsletter Editor
November already!! AND, in a few weeks we will welcome in 2020. It is a widely accepted adage that "The older you get the faster time seems to go." I don’t know about you, but to me that adage seems to be true.
The Member Enhancement Meeting at Gail Saccone’s in September was a meeting of nine active minds. Several ways to increase membership were presented and discussed including our chapter applying for a DKG Cornetet Grant to engage a speaker who would present ways of dealing with social and emotional issues in the classroom. Hopefully, we could have a presentation sometime this coming spring. We would invite current and prospective teachers from the area to attend and, at that time, provide information about the benefits of becoming a member of our society, such as the many scholarship opportunities available.
On Thursday, October 17th twelve Alpha Zeta member attended the Area V dinner meeting at the Fox and Hound Restaurant in Quincy. We enjoyed a delicious buffet dinner. Lynn Howard, our state president, requested that each chapter increase their membership by one more than last year. We were entertained by Serendipity, a female acapella quartet which included Anita Newman, our Past State President. They sang songs from the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s Barber Shop Style. We joined them singing several of the songs.
On Sunday afternoon November 3rd twenty-two Area V DKG members and friends met for a wonderful afternoon of shopping at the Designer’s Circus store in Boston. The private event complete with a personal shopper and refreshments helped our members find just the right styles and outfits. This event was a fund raiser for the Plymouth Coalition for the Homeless and was a great success. We raised $228.01 for our charity. Everyone said we should have the event again next year. Many thanks to all who joined in making this event such a success. THANK YOU Gail Laffer for organizing this event each year.
Speaking of Gail….She was recently honored as an extraordinary volunteer, neighbor, and friend of the Neighborhood Association of Back Bay. Gail started volunteering in the early 70's when she moved to the Back Bay with her husband, Elliott. Initially, she helped with the Halloween Party at the Clarendon Street Playground and subsequently became chair of the Playground Committee. Gail managed events such as the NABB Street Fair and Street Dances in the late 70's and early 80's. She chaired one of the Taste of the Back Bay events and continued working on the Taste Committee for many years. She continues her dedication to education by tutoring children with reading difficulties from the Boston Public Schools, serving on the Curriculum Committee of Beacon Hill Seminars, being a Docent at the Boston Public Library, and leading tours at The Public Garden.
Our Holiday Get Together will be held this year at the Grille at Fairview Inn in the Brant Rock section of Marshfield on Tuesday, December 10th. (See the enclosed flyer) We will also be collecting donations of items such as mittens, gloves and socks for the Plymouth Area Coalition for the Homeless. Please join us next month!

DUES ARE DUE: It was voted on at the July International Convention in Austin that dues will now coincide with our fiscal year, July 1st through June 30th. NOVEMBER 2018 Pam Larson Joan Brides, Newsletter Editor
Welcome to Fall with all its beauty. The colors of the leaves have seemed more vibrant this year, perhaps due to all the rain we had the past few months. Enjoy the beauty while it lasts!
STATE FALL WORKSHOP The weekend of September 28th Gail Saccone, Debbie Gill, Janet Eskin and Mary Eppich attended the State Fall Workshop in Southbridge. On Saturday the attendees participated in a round-table Grand Conversation. Rotating to the four tables allowed members time to discuss four areas: Fundraising, Programs, Membership Growth, and Communication. A summary of the ideas garnered at the workshop will be presented in the next edition of the Baystater.
DONATION OF BOOKS:Mary Ellen Connor and Pam Gould went to the Plymouth Area Coalition for the Homeless in Kingston and donated books on behalf of DKG Alpha Zeta. They had a great visit with Suzanne Giovanetti the Chief Executive Officer who gratefully accepted the donation of nonfiction books for teens.
FUNDRAISER SUCCESS: On a brisk Sunday afternoon, November 4th twenty-three Area V DKG members and friends met for a wonderful afternoon of shopping and comraderie at the Designer’s Circus store in Boston. The private event complete with refreshments and a personal shopper helped members find just the right styles and outfits to purchase. This event was a fundraiser to aid the Plymouth Area Coalition for the Homeless. It was a great success as we raised $221.00 for the needy. Everyone said we should have the event again next year. Thanks to all who participated in making this fundraising event such a success!
ANNUAL DUES UPDATE:Jeanne Ivas, our treasurer, has sent our dues to the state. We currently have 36 members. Please review your information on the membership list enclosed with this mailing. If anything needs updating or changed in any way please notify Joan Brides as soon as possible.
Email: [email protected] or you can text her your updates at (508) 942-1910.
SAD AND GLAD NEWS: Sadly we say Good Bye to our sister Janet Eskin. She and her husband Richard will no longer be residents of Massachusetts, having purchased a new home in Florida. Janet has been a vital member of our Chapter since her initiation in 2002. She served as Alpha Zeta President from 2008 – 2010, has been our chapter webmaster, and the Editor of the Baystater. However, we have good news….Gail Saccone has taken on the responsibility as our new webmaster. She met with Janet and Alpha Upsilon State Webmaster Christine Bonci and has been well trained to undertake this task. THANK YOU Gail for stepping into another vital position in our chapter. We know you will be a great webmaster for Alpha Zeta’s website.
50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION Alpha Zeta Chapter was chartered in Boston on April 12, 1969. Joan Brides is planning a luncheon event at the Barker Tavern in Scituate sometime around our anniversary date. If you would be willing to help with the planning or have any ideas for this golden anniversary celebration, please let her know.

The installation of officers for 2018 – 2020 was held at the home of Caroline LaCroix on Thursday, June 28th. It was a cool, damp, rainy day outside but warm and full of friendship inside Caroline’s beautiful home. Once again, THANK YOU Caroline!

The outside temperature in Austin hovered around 103 degrees, but she said, “At least it wasn’t humid!”
A planning meeting for 2018-2019 was held on Wednesday, August 1st at the home of Gail Saccone with ten members attending. Recording Secretary Gail Saccone’s summary of the planning is below: SAVE THE DATES!

Membership Discussion
The group spent quite a while discussing ways to get new members. Young members like projects to work on…..Put flyers in teacher’s mailboxes, but that requires having an “in” with the school system….Contacting teacher colleges in the area with graduate programs: Curry, Lesley, Bridgewater, Quincy….Press releases on positive things that DKG has done in the area …Hold workshops on the Evaluation Process, Computer Skills, and Collecting Data, etc. to draw young teachers to state conferences. Gail Saccone will call Lynn Howard (Alpha Iota member and State VP) to get ideas of how their chapter has been able to keep such a large membership. An Ad Hoc Committee was established including Joan Garity, Gail Saccone, Ava Grimason and Pam Gould to work on increasing chapter membership. They were encouraged to develop program ideas, distribution of our Newsletter, and using press releases for community publicity. The charge is to develop goals and objectives for the coming year. The committee plans to meet in early September.
Request for Books and Supplies
Mary Ellen Connor asked the group to consider collecting books and school supplies to send to St. Croix. She has a contact on the island which lost four elementary schools last year due to category five hurricanes Irma and Maria.

FEBRUARY 2018 President Detra Towle Joan Brides, Newsletter Editor
Happy New Year Alpha Zeta Sisters. I send you my best wishes for a happy and healthy New Year for you and your families. I hope everyone made some wonderful holiday memories.
I miss you and would love to hear from you. Right now let's catch up with what is happening in DKG since my last newsletter.
Fall Conference and Area V
The Upsilon State Fall Conference was held on September 28th and 29th in Boxboro, MA. Our state president Bette Bridges stated that she would like to visit each chapter at least once during her biennium. We are planning to invite her to our annual meeting at the Olde Hitching Post in March. She announced that a great Cruise to Alaska with Go-Ahead Tours and DKG has been planned. If this interests you go to the DKG website for more details. Bette is reinstating the Friends of Education Award for a non-DKG member or group which will be presented at the Spring Convention in May. Please contact her at [email protected] for the information if you would like to nominate a person or group for this award. The keynote speaker at the conference was Jamie Droste, the founder of The Holocaust Stamp Project at the Foxboro Charter School. The goal of the project is to gather cancelled stamps and create collages to remember the 11 million lives lost in the Holocaust. We were able to view some collages made from the stamps. Bette has made this project a goal for her biennium. So, collect those stamps and bring them to the Hitching Post meeting and give them to her. Alpha Zeta was presented an Award for initiating 3 new members last year. Congratulations were extended to Kathleen Garity, Joan Garity and Kerri O' Leary as members of DKG. The Area Achievement Awards were not presented as most of the winners were unable to attend the fall meeting. Thus, the awards were presented at the individual area meetings. The Area V winner was our own Gail Laffer. Bette presented Gail her award at the Area V meeting on October 25th. Congratulations Gail!!
On Sunday, November 5th eighteen Area V DKG members and friends met for a wonderful afternoon of shopping and camaraderie at the Designer’s Circus store in Boston. The private event, complete with a personal shopper and refreshments, helped members find just the right styles and outfits. This event was a fundraiser to help our sisters in need through the DKG Emergency Fund. It was a great success as we raised $205.57 for the fund. Everyone attending said we should have the event again next year! Gail Laffer would like the thank everyone who participated in making this event such a success.
Two DKG Sisters Meet in NC
Soon after my arrival in North Carolina Cynthia Rizzo (one of our Alpha Zeta sisters, who like me has moved to NC) sent me a welcoming e-mail. We met on November 10th and shared a delicious lunch at the Bone Fish Grill in Raleigh North Hills. It was wonderful to talk with such a knowledgeable and caring person. I felt like I was with all of you. We plan to have another get together soon. Cynthia asked me to send her love to all of our DKG sisters in MA.
Author Presentation at Tuft Library in Weymouth
On November 16th Alpha Zeta was pleased to have Rosalind Cuschera, author of the book Journey from San Rocco, met with us to share her family’s story and to discuss the genealogical research behind her book. The book traces Rosalind’s Italian family from 1918 to 2006 and explores the dynamics of a family separated and rejoined as they search for the American dream. Rosalind was raised in Quincy and is a retired Day Trip Coordinator for the UMASS Boston’s OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) program. We invited our sister chapter Alpha Iota to join us for this interesting evening. We all enjoyed the opportunity to discuss the commonality of families of various ethnic and religious backgrounds and to learn about how to start our own genealogical research. Thanks to Rosalind for inspiring us to start our family story!
Upcoming Events
Alpha Zeta Chapter is planning a visit to Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum (ISG) on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 which is February vacation week. We will meet at Gail Saccone's home in Braintree at 10AM (781-424-4356). She is willing to carpool. We may need one other driver depending on the size of the group. It is a gem of a museum which was the home of ISG. The museum’s focal point is the ever changing garden in the court yard. There are 3 floors of art she collected throughout her travels in Italy (John Singer Sargent and other impressionists, illustrated manuscripts, tapestries, statuary, etc.). It has a small elevator for those who might need it. Admission is $15.00 for adults, seniors $13.00. There is not parking at the ISG itself, but parking is available at the MFA in their outside lots, their garage or metered street parking. Hope to see you at ISG! Please let [email protected] (note one ‘r’ in name!) or call 1-781-843-1926. Let Joan know by February 16 if you plan to attend so she can make reservations at ISG's restaurant which is not large. Note: MFA's restaurants are not an option as we would have to pay a $25.00 admission fee to use them.
Spring Into DKG
Our annual Spring into DKG dinner meeting will be held at the Olde Hitching Post in Hanson on Wednesday, March 28th (See the enclosed Dinner Registration form). Our Vice President, Pam Larson, will be conducting the meeting and we hope our DKG State President, Bette Bridges will be joining us and will collect your stamps for the Holocaust Stamp Project. A Special Invitation
On Thursday, April 12th at 7pm at the Greater New Bedford Vocational High School in New Bedford, Delta Kappa Gamma will be hosting the internationally acclaimed stress management and humor consultant LORETTA LAROCHE. This will be a fantastic opportunity to destress, laugh and pick up a tip or two on managing life in our stress filled society. With the assistance from this award tickets to Delta Kappa Gamma Members are $5.00 per ticket. Guests are welcomed to come for $10.00 per ticket. If you have been fortunate enough to have previously seen one of Loretta LaRoche’s performances, you know that it will be an enjoyable evening at a very reasonable price (Normally ticket prices are $45.00 and up). Talk about an opportunity of a lifetime!!! A flyer with all the details about this wonderful event is enclosed with this newsletter. We would love to have an impressive showing of DKG members at this presentation and are looking forward to seeing many of you at this event. For some the distance may be an issue, however, the invitation is extended to all our DKG sisters and their guests.
Spring Convention in Plymouth May 4-6, 2018
The Baystater should be arriving in your mailbox later this month with all the information for the annual spring convention. A Final Note
My sincere thanks to all who contributed to the newsletter: Joan Brides, Jo-Anne Butler, Joan Garity, Kathy Kelly, Gail Laffer, and Gail Saccone, Thank you to Pam Larson, our officers and so many others who have stepped up to keep OUR chapter healthy and happy this past year. It truly does “Take a Village” as Hilary Clinton says. As I see our sisters I am reminded of the words of Maya Angelou “We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but we rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” I look forward to seeing many of you at the Spring Convention in Plymouth, May 4th to the 6th. May we all spread our wings and soar! Dee

JUNE 2017 President Detra Towle
Greetings! I hope you are welcoming summer and finally enjoying some beautiful weather. We send get well wishes to Louise Scott as she recovers from surgery and condolences to Pat Butler’s family on the passing of her brother-in-law.
ALPHA UPSILON STATE SPRING CONVENTION
May 5th and 6th were rainy days outside but inside it was a different story. The Spring Convention was fun-filled and inspiring. Martha Cotton turned over the gavel to Betty Ann Bridges as our new State President. The new board was sworn in as well. The reception line was heartfelt. The Ceremony of Remembrances led by Natalie Janeskiewicz, State Necrology Chair, was very emotional and meaningful.. This year each chapter representative had something special to say about their sister(s) and the music was just beautiful. The workshops gave valuable information and hands-on experiences with TWITTER and S.T.E.A.M. A “surprise visitor” from Plimouth Plantation was a crowd pleaser. We had a living history lesson in the life and the language of early settlers in the Plymouth area. At breakfast on Saturday we sat by areas to plan the area meetings for next October. There are opportunities to get involved if you are interested. Our Area V meeting will be at the Neighborhood Club in Quincy on Wednesday, October 25th. We will send more information with the reservation form as we get closer to the date. At the MINI MART our chapter sold hand-made earrings and necklaces, which everyone wanted. We profited $325.00 for our treasury. CONGRATULATIONS ALPHA ZETA! THANK YOU Gail Saccone and Gail Laffer, our ‘Super Salesladies’. If you missed it I am sure Gail Saccone could find some for you.
SPRING GATHERING AND INITIATION
Our spring gathering on June 7th was a big success. THANK YOU Caroline La Croix for your hospitality and to everyone who contributed so many delicious food items. A big welcome to our newest member, Kerri O’ Leary, who was initiated at the meeting. Kerri was sponsored by her aunt, Dr. Jennifer Curtis-Whipple, and her grandmother-in-law, Mary Ellen Curtis. We now have three generations of teachers in our chapter. It’s wonderful to have a new teacher to share ideas with us. Hopefully Kerri can inspire other beginning teachers to join us as a DKG member,

AREA V MEETING
This year Alpha Zeta is the host chapter. Just thought you might like to know our responsibilities as host. We coordinate the program, select and secure the meeting place and pick the menu. We invite the State President and purchase a token gift for her. We keep the lines of communication open with the other chapter presidents to be sure obligations for the meeting are met. We introduce the head table, arrange for any special needs for the program entertainment and provide the music. Finally, we must compose a brief article about the Area V meeting for the Baystater. So, SAVE THE DATE - OCTOBER 25TH and plan to join our Area V sisters for an evening of fun, food and fellowship. We always have a wonderful evening together!
ANOTHER YEAR BEGINS
Our calendar year ends on June 30. SO… it’s time again for annual dues ($85 for most of us; $45 for our few reserve members). You can send them at your convenience to our treasurer Jeanne Ivas, 315 Winter Street, Norwell, MA 02061
i will still be a member of DKG Alpha Zeta and plan to carry out my responsibilities as your president to the best of my abilities. Obviously, I will not be able to attend all events. Our First Vice-President, Pam Larson and our Second Vice-President, Jacqui Carton have agreed to step-up and represent Alpha Zeta when necessary. Thank you Pam and Jacqui! I hope to read your surveys and see many of you at Gail Laffer’s Tour and at her home on the 27th of June for our planning meeting for 2017-2018. I am very proud of our chapter as everyone helps all the time, so we are able to fulfill the Seven Purposes of Delta Kappa Gamma.
It is said that “Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina in the morning.” But right now I think being with my DKG family is the best. Take Care,

APRIL 2017 President Detra Towle
Greetings on this very rainy April day. Guess we will have to make our own sunshine.
WINTER ADVENTURE
The January date for a museum trip was cancelled due to snow. Not a problem. We rescheduled it for February 22nd. The Robert McCloskey Exhibit was outstanding. We shared memories of our childhood and our teaching days as we viewed “Make Way for Ducklings.” The Museum of Fine Arts has so much to offer we wished we had more time. We had lunch at one of the museum restaurants and made the popular visit to the gift shop. Before we left a staff member took a picture of Gail Laffer, Mary Eppich, Joan Garity, Pam Larson, Kathy Kelly, Kathleen Garity, and me. We were all smiles standing in front of the Dale Chihuly glass structure.
SPRING INTO DKG MEETING
In March, our gathering place was the Olde Hitching Post. We had what I called a CONGRATULATIONS meeting. Kathleen Garity and Joan Garity were initiated into DKG Alpha Zeta. Kathy has worked at Blue Cross-Blue Shield in a leadership position She also teaches adult education at the Crain Library in Quincy. Joan is an educator and a nurse. She is a retired professor from the University of Massachusetts, in Boston. Joan came to the fall meeting at the Olde Hitching Post as a guest of Kathy Kelly. After talking with Joan Brides, Louise Scott and others, Joan G. asked how she could join Alpha Zeta. The next time Joan saw her sister Kathy they discussed what her experience was and the rest is history.
We acknowledged the retirement of Pamela Gould from the Halifax Public Schools. Pam was presented with a framed Delta Kappa Gamma “In Retirement Poem” written by Beulah Brown, our now deceased chapter president from 1976-1978.
A prospective member, Kerri O’Leary, was presented by Membership Chair, Mary Eppich. She was nominated by Mary Ellen Curtis and her daughter Jennifer Curtis-Whipple. Kerri is a Special Needs teacher in Scituate and was unanimously accepted for membership. She is also the granddaughter-in-law of Mary Ellen Curtis and niece of Jennifer. We might become the only chapter around to have three generations of teachers from one family. Her initiation will be on June 7th at the home of Caroline LaCroix.
LITERACY PROJECT
Thank you and congrats for donating a total of 45 Caldecott and other picture books, Our treasurer, Jeanne Ivas, presented the books to the librarian at the Vinal School in Norwell. We will continue this project next year at meetings in the fall and the spring. Keep an eye out for books and contact Kathy Kelly if you know of a school in need of books.
ALPHA UPSILON STATE
Some of our members will be attending the ALPHA UPSILON STATE SPRING CONVENTION on May 5th and 6th at Hotel 1620 in Plymouth where the state officers for 2017 - 2019 will be installed. Gail Saccone will be bringing some new jewelry to sell at the Mini-Mart table.
We were saddened to learn of the passing of Ursula Hogan on April 5th. For many years she was the State Music Chair.
SAVE THE DATES
On WEDNESDAY, JUNE 7th at 5:00 p.m. we will have a COTTAGE MEETING and the initiation for Kerri O’Leary at the home of Caroline LaCroix, 65 Shrine Road in Norwell. As in the past, there will be a buffet dinner with members bringing items for the buffet table.

Please contact Caroline by June 1st if you are planning to attend and what you would like to bring for the buffet table. Email: [email protected] Phone: (781) 826 8617

JANUARY 2017 President Detra Towle
Happy New Year! It is time to reflect and to begin anew to share and grow together.
REMEMBER NOVEMBER 8
Many of our DKG members and guests experienced a fun-filled day of shopping, pizza and laughter on November 8, 2016 at Designer’s Circus. Gail Laffer planned the event and sent this report: “On a brisk, early November Sunday afternoon, 22 Area V DKG members and friends met for a wonderful afternoon of shopping and camaraderie at the Designer’s Circus store in Boston. The private event complete with a personal shopper and refreshments helped members find just the right styles and outfits. This event was a fund raiser for our state charity, Safe Passage. It was a great success as we raised $374.43 for the charity. Everyone said we should have the event again next year! Thanks to all who participated in making this event such a success.” Congratulations Gail and thanks to you and all who made this day a terrific success. On November 11, 2016 Gail Saccone and I attended this year’s Leadership Conference in Boxboro. If you have not had the opportunity to go to one yet we highly recommend you try to get to the next conference. Donna Brown and the other presenters truly inspired us. SEPTEMBER 2016 President Detra Towle
Hello and happy autumn to my Alpha Zeta sisters. I hope school openings went smoothly for those of you who are in the classroom. It was always my favorite time of the year with new students, new school supplies, and endless possibilities. For the retirees, I hope you are enjoying your fall activities.
LEAP INTO LITERACY AT THE OLD HITCHING POST
Thursday, Sept, 20th was our first meeting of the year at the Olde Hitching Post in Hanson. We shared fellowship and had a wonderful meal together. Mary Eppich delivered a meaningful invocation. We collected 35 Caldecott and other picture books for school libraries in areas where early learners have limited English. This is part of Kathy Kelly and Gail Laffer’s literacy program. Kathy gave everyone a list of all the Caldecott Award Books. It was suggested we insert a note that the book is a gift from DKG. Louise Scott may be able to help with this. Books will be collected again at our March meeting. Thanks to all for your generous donations!
Two guests were invited to join us at the Old Hitching Post. Christine Fitzgibbons was my guest. Joan Garity was Kathy Kelly’s guest. Christine rejoined the chapter at the meeting. Welcome back Christine! Joan is a retired professor from the UMASS COLLEGE of NURSING & Healthy Services. Joan Garity, Kathy Kelly and I were classmates at Fontbonne Academy. Joan would like to become a member of DKG. Unfortunately, we received resignations from Diana Seyfert and Carol Price. These two ladies will be missed. They were informed that they could rejoin anytime. There is no paperwork, fees, or ceremony required. If you know anyone who has left and wants to return it is easy. Just come to a meeting and pay your dues. We would love to have them.
50/50 RAFFLE
Ava Grimason and Mary Ellen Connor ran a Heads or Tails raffle. It was really fun. You choose heads or tails on a coin toss. If you are correct you stay in the game. Mary Eppich was the winner of half of the pot. The other half went to our treasury. Congrats Mary!

We had a planning meeting at my condo in Braintree on July 25th. BRING A BOOK BRING A GUEST TAKE A CHANCE CELEBRATE
At the first meeting of the year we usually initiate new members, but we have no new members this year. At the planning meeting it was decided that it would be nice if each member who wanted to invite a guest. It could be a former member or a new, prospective member. You could offer to pay for her meal if you wish. This would be an opportunity to visit old friends and to meet new friends. Kathleen Kelly, our Literacy Chair, has initiated a project to bring more Caldecott Award books and other picture and easy reader books into the early grade classrooms of our schools. If each member could bring a book to the first meeting it would be greatly appreciated!
We would like to celebrate the retirement of Diane Grieco from Hull Public Schools and Pam Gould from Halifax Elementary School. Congratulations Ladies!!! (If you know of another of our sisters who retired this year please notify Joan Brides.) We would also like to recognize Jacqui Carton who stepped up to be our second vice-president. Time again for Annual DUES! Please send your dues to our treasurer, Jeanne Ivas, or bring it to the Hitching Post and personally hand it to Jeanne.
See you in September! Dee

Time again for Annual DUES! Please send your dues to our treasurer, Jeanne Ivas, or bring it to the Hitching Post and personally hand it to Jeanne.
See you in September! Dee

SEPTEMBER 2015 President Pat Butler
Dear DKG Sisters,
What a wonderful time we had at the Barker Tavern on August 25th. Everyone who was there thoroughly enjoyed the meal and the time spent together. We initiated five new members: Kristin Butler, Rockland Schools; Susan Dempsey, Norwell Schools; Valerie Devine, Retired Weymouth Schools; Pamela Gould, Halifax Schools, and Margaret (Meg) Kent, Norwell Schools. I think they had a wonderful time and I am looking forward to them enjoying their new memberships. I hope you will all make them feel very welcome in the years to come.
For those of you who were not able to attend, you were missed. Our program gave recognition of some very important anniversaries for our members. We had two 25 year membership anniversaries. Kathleen Schwab was recognized and presented with a beautiful rose for her 25 years of membership. Carol Price was unable to attend, but a congratulatory note was sent to her. Wow! Twenty-five years is a remarkable feat. Other anniversaries mentioned on the program were: Cynthia Rizzo - twenty years, Jennifer Whipple - fifteen years, Debbie Gill and Pam Larson - ten years, Jacqui Carton and Barbara Gauthier - five years.
Special thanks go to so many people for making the initiation luncheon a great success. Thank you to Joan Brides for the beautiful program that she made and the work she did helping me with the final plans for the luncheon. Thanks, too, Joan for the beautiful work on the certificates for the initiates. Thank you, Mary Eppich for the very special roses. I heard they stayed gorgeous for a long while, almost two weeks. Thanks also, Mary for all you do as our membership chair.
Thanks to Pam Larson for setting up the ceremony table so beautifully and graciously housing the initiation boxes this year at her home. Thanks also to Jeanne Ivas for all her work as chapter treasurer. Many thanks to all who participated in the initiation ceremony: Mary Eppich, Detra Towle, Pam Larson, Jeanne Ivas, Louise Scott, Mary Ellen Connor, and Gail Laffer, who was in charge of the music. Another thank you to Gail Saccone, for taking pictures of this special occasion and to Barbara Gauthier, for handling the raffle for three beautiful mums. It does take a village, and we have the greatest village of helpers.
I hope to see you all at the Designers Circus on Sunday, September 27th, from 1 – 4. We are raising money for the orphanage Be Like Brit. For more information about this wonderful charity go to https://www.belikebrit.org Please remember to contact Gail Laffer at [email protected] if you are planning to come. Invite all your friends, coworkers and bargain hunters to come too. Please spread the word.
Are you wondering, Where in the World is DKG ? Interested in learning about service dog training ? Ever had the chance to hold an official Olympic torch which carried the flame lit at the altar of Zeus and relayed by a DKG member through sixty-five of the United States ? All this and more will be waiting for you at our Fall Workshop September 18 - 19 at the Holiday Inn Boxborough Woods. For more information, go to http://alupsma.weebly.com.
This year’s Area V Meeting is on Thursday, October 22, 2015, at the Neighborhood Club in Quincy. We know that you will have a delicious meal and be able to meet with our fellow sisters and our new State President, Martha Cotton. Please see the included flyer/registration form for more details. Responses go to our treasurer Jeanne Ivas. Thank you in advance, Jeanne for all this work. Our chapter is responsible for one of the raffle baskets. Thank you to Barbara Gauthier for taking care of this for us. There will be three raffle baskets available worth between $40 and $50 each. We were also delegated to create the flyer to be distributed to the members of the three chapters in Area V. Joan Brides collated the information and produced the flyer. Great job and patience, Joan. We are also in charge of the centerpieces. Believe me, I have no talent in this area and need someone to volunteer to head this task. Of course, you can nominate someone else if you think they would do a better job. We are hoping to keep it simple. My thoughts are maybe a simple Mum plant with bow if we could get a good price. A few years ago we did pumpkins which were spray painted ??? Is there something very simple you’ve seen at The Christmas Tree Shop? Anyway, I may be contacting you soon to help out. But, great ideas are welcome from all. You don’t have to go to the meeting in October to help out with this project.
Finally, a huge THANK YOU to all of you who have already paid your annual dues. If you have not yet paid, please send your annual dues a.s.a.p. to Jeanne Ivas, Alpha Zeta Treasurer 315 Winter St, Norwell, MA 02061.
I am hoping to see many of you at all these upcoming events in the next few months.
Enjoy the beauty of Fall!
Peace, Pat

FEBRUARY 2015 President Pat Butler
I am in total disbelief of how snow laden this winter has been. I have been thankful that we have had electricity for most of it, even though those new electric prices are also shocking. (I have an all-electric home.) SPRING - I know you are out there somewhere, please come soon! I hope that all of you have been safe and warm and not overdoing it with snow shoveling. I think that those of you that are currently in the classroom have had way too many snow days and can’t wait to get back to school, just so you won’t get out too late. Hopefully, there will be some adjustments to the 180 day requirement. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.
Between the weather and other happenings we have missed some of our other gatherings. There is, hopefully, a new fundraising activity coming very soon, probably in May. It’s a very exciting fundraising activity and perfect for the bargain hunter in all of us. For a tiny bit of interest go to www.designerscircus.com
Only a couple of members contacted me about the Paint Nite. I bought my ticket on groupon. Hopefully, we can talk about it at our next meeting at the Hitching Post. Maybe we can still figure out a way that some of us can get together and enjoy an evening of fun and art together.
MARCH DINNER MEETING
Our next chapter meeting will be held at the Olde Hitching Post in Hanson the 26th of March. This has traditionally been the meeting for presenting Recommendations for Prospective Membership. Take a serious look around and see if you can find a perspective member. I have some ideas about getting new members which I will present at the meeting. We can nominate members at any time. Dinner information and forms for prospective members are enclosed in this mailing. This is an important meeting for our membership. I am looking forward to seeing many of you at that meeting.
ALPHA UPSILON STATE T
The Spring Convention will be on May 1- 2 at the Holiday Inn Boston - Dedham Hotel and Conference Center. It will be an opportunity to fellowship with our sisters not only in our own chapter but throughout the state. If you have never attended a State Convention please consider joining us. The new state officers will be elected. The nominating committee has nominated Martha Cotton for President, Bette Ann Bridges as 1st Vice President, Lynn Howard for 2nd Vice President, Claire LaBonte as Recording Secretary and our own Gail Saccone as Corresponding Secretary. After the report of the Nominating Committee has been made, additional nominations may be made from the floor. I’m looking forward to voting for Gail. She will be great in that role. Special thanks go out to our own Ava Grimason who was on the Committee. For more information please check the new state website.
NEW STATE WEBSITE
The state has a new website. Please go to it and mark it as a favorite so you can quickly have access to it. http://alupsma.weebly.com/ There you will find the Spring Convention Registration Form. (The old website will be shut down.
NORTHEAST REGIONAL CONVENTION
July 8 –11, 2015
Make plans now to attend the Northeast Regional Conference in Baltimore, Maryland. It’s not too soon to start thinking about this. The Regional Conferences are fantastic What’s more, if you haven’t been to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor you truly are missing a lot. It’s really beautiful and just a stone’s throw to Camden Yards. Guess what! The Red Sox are in town. We will be staying at the Hyatt Regency in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. There are some exciting plans for first timers so really think about joining us. Go to our International website http://www.dkg.org for more information.
SHOPPING ON AMAZON
Are you like me and buy many things on line at Amazon.com? Well you should buy at Amazonsmile.com. It’s the same site, but a portion of your purchase goes to the charity of your choice. Of course, DKG would like you to pick DKG. It’s really simple. Try it. Once you pick your charity it will automatically be set up but you do have to go to www.amazonsmile.com
MASSACHUSETTS HISTORY PDPs
At the DKG Area V meeting in October some of us expressed interest in participating in the 10 hour PDP program about Massachusetts History in the 1700 and 1800s . Our next activity will be a tour of the Boston Tea Party Museum. It will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2015. Then, to complete the 10 hours we will tour the John Adams' houses in the spring and we will meet to share projects and possibly tour another museum or have a book discussion. If you know of anyone in our chapter or in your school that would like to participate contact Lynn Howard, of Alpha Iota Chapter, at 781-901-9120. I believe you can still do things to make up our Area V meeting if you didn't attend the meeting. Call Lynn for details. Even if you are not interested in the PDP’s you might just want to attend for the “fun” and “history” of it. Come join us on a tour of The Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum and brush up on your American History.
CHAPTER BY-LAWS
The By-Law committee, made up of Jacqueline Carton, Gail Saccone and Pat Butler, have met several times this year and worked on-line together. We have compiled a set of By-Laws for your approval. In a few days I will have Joan Brides email a copy of these By-Laws for you to look over and print out if you’d like. I didn't want Joan to have to mail too many things to you this time. We’ll vote on the By-Laws at the meeting at the Hitching Post on March 26th. Well, we've certainly got a lot of things to be thinking about and looking forward to. Hope to see you soon.
Peace, Pat

JULY 2014 President Pat Butler
We had a wonderful meeting on July 15 at Gail Saccone's new home. Thank you so much, Gail, for opening your beautiful home for our meeting. Thanks to all who attended. We really accomplished quite a bit. It was such a joy to catch up with so many of you.
Janet Eskin had informed me that she would like to retire from the job of Treasurer. She is continuing her membership in Alpha Zeta, but has found that the commute and responsibilities have made it very difficult to make our meetings; something she thinks is important. Our thanks to Janet for all she has done to help our chapter as treasurer and all the jobs she has done for us. I am hoping that she will continue to be a member of our chapter as she is such a valued sister. Jeanne Ivas was gracious to take on the job of Treasurer. Janet and others will be helping her get up to speed and I greatly appreciate her willingness to help. Thank you again, Jeanne. Besides voting on dues, we discussed plans for different fund raising ideas, the need for By-Laws, the possibility of a new Literacy project, and setting up a year's worth of meetings.
We will be keeping you all informed about what's happening and how you might be able to help.
Meanwhile, I am so looking forward to our next meeting at PJ's on the 19th of August. I hope to see many of you there. I do hope you can make it. Remember to send your reservation to Joan Brides by Friday, August 1. Continue to stay safe and happy this summer. Pat

FEBRUARY 2014 President Pat Butler
WOW! What a winter it has been.
I am definitely counting the days until Spring arrives. It can’t come soon enough!
AREA V
We had a great turn out from our chapter at the Area V meeting in October. The musical program presented by Bea Reynold’s sister, Fran Botelho Hogg was fantastic. Hopefully we will have the opportunity again to see one of her programs. From the raffles we raised $211.00 for the Be Like Britt Foundation. We plan to present this donation, along with monies from other chapters, to Britt’s mother at the Spring Convention.
APPLE PICKING and WINE TASTING Several members had a fun day in Bolton. THANKS again to Janet Eskin for hosting this fun event.
NEW BOOKLET
Our membership booklet has been revised and updated for 2013-2014. THANK YOU Joan Brides for collating and printing this for our chapter members. Please refer to this to contact members by phone or email.
WORKSHOP
On Saturday, March 15th, Janet Eskin and Christine Bonci will be presenting a Weebly Web Page Design Workshop from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm at Harbor One in Mansfield. Contact Janet Eskin if you would like to attend. There is a $25 registration fee that will be returned to you the day of the workshop.
February 2014
MARCH DINNER MEETING
Our next chapter meeting will be held at the Olde Hitching Post in Hanson the 19th of March.
This is the meeting for presenting Recommendations for Prospective Membership in DKG and voting on the slate of chapter officers for 2014 -2016. Dinner information and forms for prospective members are enclosed in this mailing. This is an important meeting for our membership.
Please make every effort to attend.
ALPHA UPSILON CONVENTION
The spring convention will be held in Plymouth at the Radisson, May 2 – 4, 2014. Hopefully many of our members will be able to attend to witness the installation of our new chapter president, Pat Butler. Alpha Upsilon has reserved a block of rooms that must be filled. It will be a great opportunity to fellowship with our sisters not only in our own chapter but our sisters throughout the state. Nita Scott is the Key Note Speaker. I have heard through the “grapevine” she is a fantastic, motivational speaker.
STATE DUES UPDATE
The state will be voting on a dues increase at the convention. They have looked at ways to cut costs but have had to take thousands of dollars from the reserve account to meet expenses.
UPCOMING EVENT
Field Trip to the Museum of Fine Arts on Tuesday, April 22. Contact Pam Larson for more information.

Several of our members attended the convention in Sturbridge and saw Kay Simms installed as the new state president. As usual it was a very impressive ceremony.

REVIEW OF FALL EVENTS
We had a good turn out from our chapter at the Area V meeting on October 10th. Tarsha Veiga presented an informative and interactive program about DKG’s involvement in Schools in Africa.
Nine of us had a fun day on our Field Trip to Bolton. We enjoyed apple picking, wine tasting, a little shopping, picnicking, and a short business meeting. It was a Fabulous Fall Event that most likely will be repeated again in 2013. THANKS Janet Eskin for hosting this fun event.
Seven members attended the important presentation by Lissa Budge-Johnson on November 3rd to learn how to Prevent Identity Theft. We found out that things we do on a daily basis could be jeopardizing our identity. Lissa’s expertise and humor resulted in a very informative and engaging presentation
LOSS OF A MEMBER
We were saddened to learn of the passing of Ethel Page this past November. She was an avid advocate for DKG and served as Alpha Zeta President from 1986-1988.

FALL 2012 President Ava Grimason
DKG INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION IN NYC
The International Convention in New York City was inspiring, educational, and fun. Janet Eskin, Gail Saccone, Pat Butler, Mary Ellen Connor, Gail Laffer, and I took the train into the city on Tuesday July 24th. After registering and getting settled we attended New York Night. The Presentation of the Flags was very beautiful. There was a variety of entertainment including singing and dancing. Throughout the week we heard awesome keynote speakers, reports from committees, presentations of awards, and inspiration from Jensi Souders, the outgoing International President.
We did get some time to enjoy the city. We were lucky enough to get tickets to the fabulous play, “Memphis.” Some of us did sightseeing and ate in some wonderful restaurants. I would highly recommend attending a future convention. Meeting educators from around the world is an inspiring, wonderful experience.
BARKER TAVERN LUNCHEON
We enjoyed a lovely afternoon at Barker Tavern on August 21st and are happy to have Jeanne Ivas, a SPED teacher in Hull, and Helen Mastico, Librarian at the Hanson Middle School, as our newest members. They were initiated using the new ceremony revised by International this year.
IMPORTANT SISTERS
At the luncheon we recognized Louise Scott with a gift of a clock for her years of dedication and service as the treasurer of Alpha Zeta. We would like to congratulate Mary Ellen Connor and Sandra Courchesne on their retirement. We wish everyone many happy, carefree days in the future.
ANNUAL DUES ARE DUE!!!!!
If you have already paid you dues, THANK YOU. If not, please send your check A.S.A.P. to our new treasurer, Janet Eskin
